KANDEN KADHALAI TAMIL MOVIE REVIEW 2009
Movie Review

Kanden Kadhalai story is about how two strangers meet each other on a train journey and later how their lives are changed. The two strangers are played by Bharath and Tamannah.
Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has been invited to launch the audio ‘Kanden Kadhalai’ on August 14 in Chennai. Wondering what Imtiaz Ali has got to do with this Tamil flick? Yeah! It’s the Tamil remake of his previous directorial hit ‘Jab We Met’, which is one of the best ever-cherishing poignant flicks of Bollywood.
Well, his arrival in Chennai wouldn’t merely mark him as the filmmaker of ‘Jab We Met’ for he has more reason to rejoice. His recent release ‘Love Aaj Kal’ has witnessed tremendous record-breaking collections in Chennai box office overshadowing other Tamil releases.
The occasion will have more filmmakers addressing his significance and unique style of filmmaking. ‘Yaavarum Nalam’ fame Vikram K Kumar will also share the dais with Imtiaz along with mainstream filmmakers of Tamil industry. It’s notable that cinematographer Natraj Subramaniam, who delivered fantabulous visuals for both the films of Imtiaz, is a famous actor in Tamil.

Kannan, once an associate of director Mani Ratnam has remade ‘Kanden Kadhalai’ while Moser Baer and Blue Ocean Entertainment jointly produce the film with Bharath and Thamannah donning lead roles.

How their lives change after this forms the crux of the movie.

Tamannah plays as Thevar girl in the film. while Kareena played as Punjabi girl in Jab We Met, Tamannah who had also undergone an image makeover for this role, she even have watched Jab We Met atleast four times.
But i guess Tamannah cannot match the peppy character which Bebo did in the original movie.
Although it is a remake, she claims that she and Bharath will bring a fresh perspective to the film, thanks to director Kannan’s effort and encouragement. The two songs shot so far have come out brilliantly. Though she has done her best to live up to Kareena’s performance in Hindi lets see how it is. A few of the sequences for the film were shot in the dense forests of Pollachi,

HOLLOWEEN SPECIAL SHOW 2009

This years rendition of 10 silly and satirical Halloween costume ideas for those who intend to partake. Given that this year Halloween falls on the weekend there will likely be large trick or treaters and party goers out and about.

10. Angry town hall guy. Dress normally but at your Halloween party yell incomprehensible non-sequitur things at other party goers about how they are taking away your right to party.
9. Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. The hair is money. Could be an easy homemade costume throw a suit on and a wig of some sort.
8. Vampire is sure to be popular given the Twilight New Moon era. Its only a good choice if you are in a rush and you can not come up with anything else.
7. Halloween cupcake. Everyone loves them but a costume where one is a cupcake is sure to be a surprise to co-workers.
6. Alien. Not an illegal alien. An outer space alien is good enough.
5. For the ladies, a pin up girl, sexy nurse or librarian or any of the type as long as its not too trashy.
4. For the guys, a nerd, gladiator or Teabagger as long as its not too trashy. You decide.
3. Dancing with the stars costume is a good idea for the couple. You can show of your moves at the Halloween party.
2. Although we think its way too soon for Michael Jackson costumes, its likely to be popular given his untimely passing, the release of his movie This Is It and because of Thriller itself.
This Halloween, the funk/R&B band "Here Come The Mummies" is a hot topic.

On Thursday, the band put on a special Halloween show in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Today the guys covered in tape were on The Bob & Tom Show.

The band's live shows have been praised by many, including Bob Payne of The Chattanoogan:

This is one of the best shows of the year, with the boys in bandages from Nashville coming to town with their unique brand of funk. If you like horns, percussion, and an incredibly tight band, then this is the show for you. A highly successful group of studio musicians, HCTM will leave their Grammy awards at home, but bring the talent it took to win the coveted awards.

The Fall Hollywood Movie Reviews:

A chunk of the movie is composed of fantasy sequences as Roy spins a fantastical, sometimes nonsensical adventure story. Improvisation (or is it customization?) leads to countless narrative shifts and leaps of logic, but his story ostensibly concerns a masked bandit (Pace himself) joining up with a crew of international vengeance-seekers: an ex-slave, an Italian demolitions expert, an Indian swordsman (the unspoken disagreement over what this racial designation entails is the movie's best, perfectly underplayed gag), and Charles Darwin -- accompanied, naturally, by a monkey.

These segments indulge in the director's love of perfectly framed imagery: He's obviously fond of deserts, slow motion, rich colors, fire, and more horses -- in fact, it's possible that only select 12-year-old girls love horses more than Tarsem. He's made c ountless music videos and commercials, but the ever-shifting tall-tale narrative keepsThe Fall dreamlike, rather than, say, Gatoradesque.

The fantasy sequences were shot bit by bit over the course of four years in over a dozen countries, in downtime during various commercial and video shoots, yet the different settings -- a stone maze within a castle; a tiny island visited by a swimming elephant; the cityscape painted blue -- look surprisingly unified in their beauty. The circumstances of thefilmmaking keep coming up alongside the filmmaking itself, not because The Fall is only impressive with asterisks describing its technique, but to demonstrate the filmmaker's unconventional and dedicated approach to material that could be as familiar as watching The Wizard of Oz on cable.

For a movie with such audacious, lush, and inventive images (and, yes, production backstory), the story and themes of The Fall bring to mind a whole lot of other audacious, inventive films, including several by Terry Gilliam (particularly The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and the little-seen, mostly-reviled Tideland), and even a couple of recent ones about the transformative power of storytelling and mythmaking (Be Kin d Rewind and Son of Rambow). Indeed, the screenplay is actually based on a Bulgarian film whose title translates as Yo Ho Ho (maybe the moment when Roy mistakenly believes Alexandria craves a pirate story is intended as homage). Even given the countless sources, Tarsem obviously has forged a strong bond to this material, carrying it on the back of his day job for so many years. Occasionally, though, the film feels like a tribute, or, in keeping with his painterly frames, a restoration; he's still developing his personality as a director.

The Fall is a warmer, funnier movie than The Cell, but it doesn't pop with a particular sensibility the way the films of colleagues like Fincher and Jonze do. Sometimes the gorgeous slo-mo fantasy stuff slows to a near-crawl, as if the director was picturing a few frames, not a full scene. The scenes between Roy and Alexandria have a drawn-out quality too, but it's more natural, with both Pace and Tarsem adroitly performing around Untaru's natural, guileless charm. Ultimately, the film's originality is in its approach: its heedless, strangely fitting mixture of the technical and the ineffable. At a Los Angeles hospital in the 1920s, Alexandria is a child recovering from a broken arm.

The Story:

Although Roy develops genuine affection for Alexandria, he also has an ulterior motive: by telling tales and gaining her trust, he tricks her into stealing morphine from the hospital pharmacy so he can attempt suicide.
As the line between fact and fantasy blurs, real-life people begin to populate Roy's fictitious stories and the stories themselves become a more collaborative tale to which Alexandria also contributes. A hospital nurse (Justine Waddell) becomes the center of a romantic feud between Governor Odious and the masked bandit, who turns out to be Roy. Alexandria herself becomes a character in the story; while Roy is the masked bandit in her imaginary version of the story, she is his daughter. Mesmerized by the epic, ever-changing story, Alexandria returns to the pharmacy to pilfer another bottle of morphine for Roy. While climbing on a ladder to reach the pills high on a shelf, she loses her footing and falls, injuring herself.

After surgery (depicted in an expressionistic stop-motion animated sequence by Wolfgang and Christoph Lauenstein, typical of their style), Alexandria is visited by Roy in the recovery room, where he consoles her and confesses his deception. He can now only imagine a grim ending to the tale, and encourages Alexandria to ask someone else to tell it. Alexandria insists on hearing Roy's ending.

Hindi Movie Review : London Dreams (2009)

Starring : Vipul Amrutlal Shah
Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonca

Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Asin, Ranvijay Singh, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Om Puri, Manoj Pahwa, Brinda Parekh

Arjun (Ajay) and Manu (Salman) are childhood buddies living in a Punjab village. Arjun passionately loves music and dreams of becoming a musical sensation like Michael Jackson and perform at London’s Wembley Stadium but his family hates music as it was the reason for his grand father’s death. But as after his father’s death, Arjun’s uncle (Om Puri) brings him along with him to London, he runs away to pursue his dream. Mannu grows up in the village turning out to be a good for nothing bloke who makes money by playing his band at marriage ceremonies. Meanwhile Arjun chases his dream and forms a band with two Pakistani brothers (VJ’s Aditya and Ranvijay) and Priya (Asin). When he realizes he is getting attracted to Priya he decides to hide his feelings and focus on music and only reveal to them when he fulfills his dream. He gets Mannu to London to join his band. But that he realizes turns out to be his biggest mistake. The naturally talented Mannu scores over Arjun in every department unintentionally and goes on to become a bigger sensation that a dedicated and hardworking Arjun. Jealousy starts creeping in for Arjun but the final nail in the coffin comes when he sees even Priya falling in love with Mannu. What sinister plan Arjun throws on an unsuspecting Mannu to destroy his musical career and what it all leads to forms the rest of the film.

Vipul Amrutlal Shah has delivered his technically best product till date with London Dreams. But apart from the technique its high on emotions as well. Vipul gives apt time for character development for each of his main protagonists. Devoid of unnecessary melodrama he captures the emotional moments with aplomb. Sejal Shah’s camerawork is of international standards. The night scenes are superbly lit.

Amongst the flaws, the climax is overstretched and the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music not really up to the mark, especially the climax concert numbers. The song that comes after everything is over is too slow and a rousing number would have made for an apt grand finale.

Ajay is excellent in his part and one can see the best villain awards coming his way at the awards for this year. Salman seems to be enjoying himself and is extremely likeable. Though Asin is most of the time relegated to the background she puts up a nice act. Her chemistry with Salman works. Popular VJs Aditya and Ranvijay of Roadies fame make a good debut. Om Puri in a small part impresses as usual.

This film was originally planned over a decade back to be made by Rajkumar Santoshi with SRK and Aamir. Well, it may not star them now but makes for an excellent musical journey worth an experience in the big cinema hall.

Kurbaan Hindi Film Music Review
Kurbaan (2009) Music Album Review:-

1. Shukran Allah
Song from Sonu Nigam is always a delight. But equal credits to Salim and Shreya Ghosal for their beautiful playback singing. Song moves in a smooth rhythm, you will love the sounds of guitar.
2. Dua
Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher comes together again after disappointing last effort. But this time it works. The main USP of this song is it's lyrics. Very clear and meaningful.
3. Ali Maula
Ali Maula picks up a bit slow but turns out to be magnificent song. Backed by powerful music, reckoning song for singer and music composer Salim.
4. Rasiya
It's more of a theme song for Kurbaan. Again strong music raises the tempo of this song.
5. Kurbaan Hua
The show stealer for sure. This is a Hindi rock song from talented rock music experts Vishal - Shekhar. This type of songs do tend to sound similar but it has unique touch comparable to no other song.
6. Ali Maula - Remix
This was not required, music is too loud and suppress the singers voice. Remix of Kurbaan Hua would have been better.
Overall Music Review of Kurbaan
Kurbaan Music Album boasts of powerful music but except the title track, none of the songs are going to make an impact. It's not that, rest of the songs are bad but just an average compared to what we have in our Music charts these days. Lyrics of all songs includes several Urdu wordings which we have never heard before in Hindi songs. Music of this album is more apt when you watch the movie alongside. Music is made to look the film good, to add feel and emotion to the scenes. Special credits to music composers Salim - Sulaiman for bringing something Hatke.
Favorite Soundtrack: Kurbaan Hua
Worst Soundtrack: Rasiya
Verdict: Powerful music but not enough good songs

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani Music Review
EXPECTATIONS

Now this one does sound like a promising album. First and foremost names like Pritam and Irshad Kamil are good enough to result in a quality album. Case in point being Love Aaj Kal and Jab We Met where the composer-lyricist 'jodi' has already succeeded in creating magic. Secondly, the film is a romcom in the offering with heart-throbs like Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif being paired opposite each other for the first time. Thirdly, the film is a TIPS production and it would be difficult to imagine that Ramesh Taurani would settle down for anything substandard for his own music label. With expectations well in place, one plays on Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.
Music
It's a rocking kick start for the album with some groovy beats followed by Hard Kaur's rendition leading to a superb rhythmic build up for 'Main Tera Dhadkan Teri'. K. K. comes on scene immediately and gets the pace rolling for this club track that has chartbuster written all over it. This is a kind of number that Pritam has specialized in over the years. No wonder, he makes use of his hit track record to create yet another number that straight away makes an impression in the very first listening. What impresses most in the song is the way he uses Sunidhi Chauhan in the song as each and every line from her brings in that spunk and edge to 'Main Tera Dhadkan Teri'. This one is meant for the big screen viewing. There are two more versions that follow for 'Main Tera Dhadkan Teri'. While one definitely looks forward to the 'remix version' which gets on a faster pace and makes one head for the dance floors, what surprises is the track 'Follow Me' which is a recreated version of the same song. This one is a solo version by Hard Kaur and gets into a similar seductive mood as 'Touch Me Touch Me' [Race]. Let's have a music video rolling. All in all, just the kind of treat that one was looking forward to from the album as one looks forward to what Pritam has to offer in songs to follow.

At the very first instance, 'Tu Jaane Na' seems to be embarking on a sudden start. However, a minute into the song, Atif Aslam takes over the proceedings and comes up with a heartfelt rendition for this love track. With a 'sufi' element to it, what strikes most about 'Tu Jaane Na' is a certain purity that makes it yet another quality number that Imtiaz Ali would have loved to have in his next film. Moving at a smooth pace, 'Tu Jaane Na' boasts of good lyrics and one wonders why the promos of the song have not yet been released?

Since the number takes its own time in settling down, the makers have made a smart choice in placing it as many as four times with different singers coming on board. After Atif Aslam, the song appears in a 'reprise version' with Soham, Rana Mazumdar and Ashish Pandit coming together. In fact this one turns out to be slightly more 'filmy' version in the way Soham goes about rendering the song. A 'remix version' may have sounded unnecessary on paper due to the theme and pace of the song. However, credit to DJ Suketu who gives a different dimension to 'Tu Jaane Na' and makes it sound as if this one could well have been an original version. A good remix creation. Finally arrives an 'unplugged version' and as Kailash Kher, Paresh and Naresh go about their act, one is convinced that 'Tu Jaane Na' is pretty much the other highlight number in the album after 'Main Tera Dhadkan Teri'. This is a kind of song that can be heard on a repeat mode without being bored. With first two tracks making such an impression, one goes on to have good expectations from the songs to follow.

The quintessential 'shehnai' tune that is heard in marriages finds a remix going for it, courtesy Pritam who spins a track titled 'Oh By God'. It's this 'shehnai' which is an integral part for this song that is fun and youthful with Mika and Sunidhi Chauhan coming together. Yet another high energy dance in the album, it's the kind of track that could boast of an enhanced appeal if supported by some vibrant dance moves. OVERALL

This is Pritam's year. Period. Delivering chartbusters by dozens all through the year, he can now look forward to another bountiful of hit songs up his sleeves with Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Also, Ranbir and Katrina can enjoy a hugely popular track for themselves in the form of 'Main Tera Dhadkan Teri'. Go, pick this one up from the shelves!

Skin Movie Reviews
Starring: Sam Neill, Sophie Okonedo, Alice Krige, Anthony Fabian
Director: Anthony Fabian
Studio: Jour de Fete
Genre: Drama
Rating: PG-13 (For thematic material, some violence and sexuality.)
Running Time: 1 hour 47 minutes
Release Date: October 30, 2009 (Limited)
SYNOPSIS:
Sandra Laing entered the world a beautiful baby but no one, not the hospital staff, her mother, father or neighbours would admit the obvious. Abraham and Sannie Laing were white yet their daughter was dark. By a biological quirk, the pigment of an unknown black ancestor had lain dormant for generations and manifested in Sandra. If there was ever a wrong place and wrong time for this phenomenon, it was apartheid South Africa in 1955! ‘Skin’ is a compelling and moving story about love, betrayal and reconciliation.
Powerful apartheid drama with a strong script, intriguingly complex characters and terrific performances from Sophie Okonedo, Sam Neill and Alice Krige.
What's it all about?
Directed by Anthony Fabian, Skin tells the true story of Sandra Laing (Ella Ramangwane, then Sophie Okonedo), a black woman who was born to white parents Abraham (Sam Neill) and Sannie (Alice Krige) in 1950s South Africa. When trouble at her all-white school leads to Sandra being officially reclassified as coloured, her parents go to court to try and overturn the ruling.

Years later, the law is changed so that the descendants of white parents are automatically classified as white, but this has severe repercussions when, after a series of disastrous dates with white men, Sandra falls in love with a black man (Tony Kgoroge as Petrus). Estranged from her parents as a result of her relationship, Sandra tries to have herself reclassified as coloured again so that she can legally live with her husband and children.

The Good
Fabian's direction is assured throughout, refusing to succumb to the usual manipulative cliches such as the stirring soundtrack or the big emotional speech. As a result the film feels more naturalistic and the various scenes of family conflict are all the more devastating.
Neill and Krige are both terrific in complex roles, while Okonedo is brilliant as Sandra, portraying her with a powerful inner strength and a formidable stubborn streak. Okonedo also has genuine chemistry with the likeable Kgoroge, which makes it all the more upsetting when years of frustration and alcoholism take their toll on his character.
The Great
The fact that this is a true story is gripping enough, but what makes the film stand out are the fascinatingly complex characters. For example, Abraham genuinely sees Sandra as white and fiercely adheres to the apartheid laws (his own racism is apparent in a subtle scene where he refuses to touch the hands of his black customers), while Sannie is deeply conflicted between her loyalty to her husband and her love for her daughter and she doesn't always come down on the side you expect.
Worth seeing?
Skin is a powerfully emotional, genuinely fascinating story, enriched by complex characters, superb performances and assured direction that resists the usual cliches.

Josh is a hot-shot agent, sent from Hollywood to convince former actor Jack Palladin to return to the screen one more time. But this means finding him – having renamed himself Jake - in the rural backdrop of Antigua, Guatemala. However, an unsuspecting past that connects both men begins to unfold, forcing each to reconsider their lives as a whole.

With a languid pace, the characters are allowed to slowly grow, surrounded by the beautiful Antigua – and indeed, the setting is central to the film as a whole, lovingly portrayed, with the residents shown washing clothes, socialising and going about their everyday. Sometimes it seems that Josh’s mission is secondary to Jake’s life. Not only does this create a charming and simple, yet exotic, atmosphere, but also – at least in part – shows us why Jake never returned to the western world.

The filmmaking, at times, seems to fall behind the standard of the brilliant acting and of the script, which has some wonderful dialogue. Often a quirky, even silly, element is introduced, and this seems incongruous because it is the dramatic moments that work and have the greatest impact.

Overall, the compelling aspect of the story is the two men at its heart. Certainly this relationship could have been explored much further, but the film still stands as an enigmatic and sentimental tale. What begins like a clichéd ‘dramedy’ of sorts eventually becomes a character study of two generations and values coming together, and in turn, revealing the teachings that result as a consequence.
Looking for Palladin English film Synopsis :

Hollywood talent agent Josh Ross is sent to Guatemala to lure an old Hollywood star, Jack Palladin, out of retirement. Ten years ago, a movie came out that traded on the idea that found footage of some people wandering around the forest looking for a witch could be frightening because of how real it seemed. With The House of the Devil, audiences will once again be reminded of innovation in horror. Innovation comes directly from the past. Plus, they’ll also be reminded of how awesome owning a Walkman was.
Samantha (Jocelin Donahue) is desperate for money to get out of her sex-addicted-slob-roomate-infested dorm room and into a great apartment, so she takes on a babysitting job with a strange family on the night of a full lunar eclipse.

There is one major way that this film works and another one in which it fails.
First off, if House of the Devil was put in a stack of horror flicks from 1979-1984, no one on the planet would ever realize it was made thirty years after the fact. What Ti West has achieved here as a director is creating a movie that’s not an homage – it’s a full on re-creation of the style, tone and story of the horror world of the early 80s that blends satanism and a nation’s deep concern for its babysitters.
Somehow, they even found a lead actress who looks like she popped right out of the era in Jocelin Donahue. She’s a beautiful girl next door who does a fantastic job of creating a character that’s sweet and innocent but still burdened by youthful self-centering. Plus, anyone who can hold her own against the creepy genius of Tom Noonan (and he’s just as creepy as he needs to be in this) has clearly got talent. Speaking of which, how Tom Noonan finds new ways to be creepy is beyond me. Seriously. I feel sorry for his children.
However, beyond being a first (as far as I know) culturally, the movie isn’t all that great.
I fully recognize that I’m not a huge fan of the genre in the first place, so emulating it isn’t exactly a formula for success in my eyes. The problem with it, and with House of the Devil, is that it’s mostly pedestrian stuff leading to a pay off that’s just not enough. The bulk of the film is Samantha walking around, especially the first hour or so which consists of Samantha being hired for the job and little else. Why it takes this long to get someone into the house, why it takes that long to get from the first act to the second, is beyond me.
Even once inside the house, the tone isn’t as tense as it needed to be, but it’s passable. Her encounter with Noonan’s Mr. Ulman makes skin crawl even faster when aided by her encounter with Mary Woronov’s Mrs. Ulman. The two are a perfect duet of subdued villainy. But then we get right back into watching Samantha turn on the television, turn off the television, order a pizza, wander around the house, and basically wait for the full moon and the action to arrive.

This wouldn’t be such a bad problem if the pay off was as shocking as it could have been, but over all the time invested watching A Day in the Life of Samantha doesn’t yield dividends. It’s not that the ending isn’t frightening or shocking (and I imagine it was even worse in the early 1980s), but it’s just not frightening or shocking enough. Especially for a modern audience that isn’t watching news stories constantly about Satan worshipers living next door.
As a piece of nostalgia come to life in modern times, it’s an incredible feat, an achievement that’s laudable. But the genre it’s flat out aping isn’t a great genre to begin with, featuring more filler than killer, and House of the Devil suffers because of that fanatical adherence to one of the blander section of the rental aisle.

In Turning Green; available in Los Angeles and New York theaters October 30th from New Films International, a film set in 1970s Ireland, James Powers (Donal Gallery) is a 16-year-old American teen who has been stuck in Ireland for six years after his mother died. He is force to live his three Irish aunts in a life that is dull and depressing.

James has been making a few bucks doing parlor tricks, but realizes it will take forever at that rate to save enough money to return to America. He thinks he has found his great break when he gets a job as a "collector" for Bill the Bookie (Alessandro Nivola). Unlike Bill the Breaker (Timothy Hutton), James uses his relationship skills to collect on gambling debts for his boss.

Still, James finds himself underpaid and undervalued as Bill tells him there are plenty of other boys who want his job. James finally gets his break when he is sent to London to stay with another aunt so he can get a physical exam (his aunts think he has stomach issues because he spends a lot of time in the bathroom "pleasuring" himself). While there, he discovers pornography, something apparently not readily available in his part of 1970s Ireland.

James makes a bad decision to hold out on Bill, which results in his friend Tom (Colm Meaney) getting beaten, and James facing a two week deadline to repay. Using his entrepreneurial skills, James decides to be the local porn dealer and he has his supplier in London ship him boxes, and then crates, of magazines, which he sells for more than double the cost. All goes well until the Bills become aware of the competition and are none to happy.

Turning Green is a surprisingly captivating and cleverly presented film from new writer/director team Michael Aimette and John G. Hofmann. Great supporting stars like Nivola, Hutton, and Meaney add plenty of value to this story, but it is the great presence and enthusiastic talent of new star Donal Gallery that helps Turning Green succeed.

Due to some of the prominent sexual themes, Turning Green is not for younger kids or teens, despite that fact it has not yet been rated by the MPAA. Aside from this potential setback, the film itself offers a great story of one young man's dream for something bigger and his intuition and drive to get it in the face of serious threats and obstacles.

The Jailhouse
have to admit, I am a big C. Thomas Howell fan…at least based on one movie. THE HITCHER, from 1986 starring good old C. Thomas and perennial psychopath Rutger Hauer, was a classic horror/thriller film with two actors doing brilliant work, and will always be embedded in my subconscious as a wild ride and featuring one of the most maniacal performances of all time from Mr. Hauer. The years after THE HITCHER, unfortunately, have not been kind to co-star C. Thomas Howell, who has starred in one low budget disaster after another (THE DAY THE EARTH STOPPED, anyone?), doing movies just for the sake of paying the mortgage. I do, however, see the appeal of starring in THE JAILHOUSE. For the first time since THE HITCHER, C. Thomas Howell is fun again, channeling his own Rutger Hauer and relishing the role of a sociopathic deputy. Too bad the movie around him is not up to the task of complimenting his performance.

THE JAILHOUSE is a story about Seth Delray (Howell), the new deputy in town, a family man who has agreed to move into a combination house/jail at a bargain price. The Sheriff (Philip Troy Linger, barely present and very incompetent) needs to house six inmates in Seth’s abode for at least a month, until the prison, overcrowded and undergoing renovations, is all sorted out and able to house them. As soon as the inmates arrive, however, something begins to happen to Seth. He begins to act funny, change his demeanor and become violent towards the inmates and even his own family. The inmates are starting to disappear, Seth’s family is scared by him and move into the grandmother’s house, and it is up to the nice guy prisoner (Rey Valentin) and the token hot inmate (Lindsey McKeon) to figure out what is going on and save themselves before they are next
This movie really does make me go bananas. The premise is set up nicely and lays out the absurd plot of living with inmates rather cleanly. Director Billy Lewis also is very adept at the camera, and is able to provide nice zoom shots, old school “nickelodeon” style flashback sequences and interesting angle shots that liven up the festivities, even when there is no action on screen. C. Thomas Howell also knocks it out of the park as a possessed (?) new deputy who dispenses a little old school justice on the inmate inhabitants of his home, but that is essentially where the good ends. The plot, borrowing from THE AMITYVILLE HORROR in a few basic ways, is very thin and barely laid out in the film. Nothing is ever really laid out for you after the initial setup. Inmates go into their cells, Seth goes nuts immediately, inmates start to go missing, and so on. The other cops in the movie are very inept and slow-witted, even the Sheriff. The inmates, led by Stark (Rey Valentin), leave virtually no impression and make some truly dumbfounded moves (Why does Maddy only slightly slice Seth when she had all day to plunge that knife square in his head?). For an 86 minute movie, the pace tends to lag and drag due to the lack of background on the house and its previous inhabitants. The movie might have worked if details were explained or at least strongly hinted at, but then the ending essentially wrecked that possibility. I will not spoil it for people who want to see this film but let me tell you, for a movie that gives very little character or plot details through out, it certainly lays it on thick at the last minute. To be brief, the movie dumps a chunk of plot and character details in the last few minutes, and the movie, what good parts it had, was undone by the lame “twist” ending. It screams last minute rewrite (not to mention borrowing elements from the movie STAY with Ewan McGregor).

THE JAILHOUSE is by no means a flat out awful movie that has no redeeming values. The core concept is sound and C. Thomas Howell goes all out to make the movie interesting while he is on screen, and earns one skull based on his presence alone, but the lack of solid plotting and developed characters we might actually care about (I can’t even recall Seth’s wife and two kids, who were present at the beginning of the film and departed about a third of the way through, showing how much of an impression they left) do this movie in at the end. As for the ending, some will like it, some will despise it. It was like the movie - good idea, little positive execution.

Gentlemen Broncos 2009 Movie

MPAA Rating: PG13
Austin, Texas. The heat is finally coming under control, the sun dresses and flip-flops are slowly giving way to boots and jackets, and one of Austin's best festivals is back. It's Fantastic Fest, people. Day One for me, and it kicked into high gear with the premiere of Jared Hess' latest comedy "Gentlemen Broncos", his third feature, one that exists in the same parallel universe he first introduced us to in "Napoleon Dynamite" and later "Nacho Libre".

Benjamin (Michael Anagarano), a young, withdrawn nerd of a kid who lives with his mom Judith (Jennifer Coolidge) in a house that's been retrofitted with a geodesic dome, fancies himself a sci-fi writer. His latest novella, "Yeast Lords", is a surreal mix-up of heroic sci-fi and fantasy tropes, one that features his hero Bronco (Sam Rockwell), a thickly-bearded John Carter-type on a mission to save his planet from Cyclops warriors and their evil masters, all with some missile-launching deer and a little genital mutilation thrown in for good measure. Benjamin travels to a writers' camp where he meets Tabatha (Halley Feiffer), a swooning but clumsy temptress who wastes no time in borrowing money from Benjamin to buy tampons, and Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement), the camp's featured guest speaker and Benjamin's idol, a sci-fi author famous for such works as the "Cyborg Harpy" trilogy. Chevalier gives the camp's young writers a chance at publication by holding a contest in which he'll pick the best new work, so Benjamin submits "Yeast Lords", hoping to win a limited print run and Chevalier's admiration. But Chevalier's career is on the wane and his latest book has been rejected by his publishers, so upon reading Benjamin's opus he decides to rewrite the text and submit it as his own. Cue hilarity.
There's a big difference between being weird and setting out to be weird. Filmmakers like David Lynch make movies that can be hard to shake out of your head because it's clear that they're often working on a very different level than most. Sometimes the work that results is obtuse, but when our oddball creative-types hit their stride they can take us to places that both confound and stimulate. Jared Hess' parallel universe is one that looks a whole lot like our own, except every single person has a glaring and sometimes borderline creepy eccentricity. His is a world of (mostly) well-meaning freaks. This had an interesting effect in "Napoleon Dynamite", but the effect has since worn thin, and in "Gentlemen"'s case wears out it's welcome (and, honestly, my patience) long before the third act. The thing is, if your world is populated by freaks, nobody gets to play it straight, and after a while the effect is akin to a steadily creepy bout of one-upmanship. Worse, the weirdness feels forced, like every actor prepped for his or her role by picking one prop, wig, and facial tic in order to find that "weird vibe" and set themselves apart from all the other wig-wearing, face-twisting, gown-wearing bizarros running around. A truly inspired weirdo could turn this sort of stew into a compelling psychotic circus. In Hess' hands, unfortunately, the lasting effect is numbness.

But I'm hesitantly recommending it anyway, for one chief reason: Jemaine Clement, whose Ronald Chevalier is such a distinctly funny creation that you'll spend every moment he's on screen laughing at his every pause and tic, and ultimately you'll wish the script had made his plagiarism and ensuing rivalry with Benjamin the key focal point. But oddly enough, it's really not. The trailers would have you believe that this movie is some sort of uber-geeky "Rushmore", but its pacing follows the same model as Hess' previous two films, both of which tended to meander off to follow less-interesting plot threads and spend too much time with characters that never really develop despite the attention Hess lavishes on their every move. What's especially frustrating about all this is that the film nails the nerdy excesses of sci-fi fandom while also serving as a love letter to all things geeky. The opening credits, which feature the kinds of paperback covers that will be instantly recognizable to anyone who's ever browsed the science fiction section of their local bookstore, put an instant smile on my face and earned from me a level of goodwill that had sadly dissipated by the thirty minute mark. And when your movie has Sam Rockwell flying around on a rocket-launching battlestag and still elicits yawns, something is horribly, horribly wrong. See it for Clement, if only to wonder at what could have been.

Throughout the film, we get to witness a motley crew of clueless hopefuls get spoon fed the wit and wisdom that it takes to seduce difficult women, led by their womanizing French teacher, Philippe. Through Philippes seduction course and How-To-manual, he drops the skills to help this eclectic group of guys to find out how to capture the womanor rather mateof their dreams. However throughout this school, we get to see if the master womanizer himself has the ability to keep his game tight or if he is the one that really needs schooling. Along the way we also get a taste of real-life NYC street interviews on romance, sex and seduction to see how it all stacks up in real life. Although he swore otherwise, Richard Temtchine was trying to seduce me. “Seduction, it’s definitely an art form,” he explained, as a small plume of steam rose from his espresso.

“You’ve heard of Cyrano de Bergerac?” I nod my head unconvincingly and try to Google it in my head. How do you spell de Bergerac? He was my great inspiration,” said Mr. Temtchine, a Paris-born movie producer and former hairstylist who is going to give a lecture, “How to Seduce Difficult Women,” in New York starting at the end of January. We were at Le Bilboquet, the tiny East 63rd Street bistro favored by Brioni-clad Euro men and their ladies. The frosty reception that had greeted my entrance melted like April snow once it was clear I was there to meet “Reee-charrrd!” Not particularly tall, Mr. Temtchine has a boxy stature, salt-and-pepper tousled hair that’s long enough to grab in fistfuls, and a face that resembles Mikhail Baryshnikov’s.

(The specifics of his age turned out to be a bit murky. “When I need to be childlike—which women adore!—I am 10,” he said. “When I am in love, I am 20; when I am not, I am 20 plus tax, and I pay a lot of taxes!”) “Like so many men today,” he continued, “Cyrano was trapped in shame, unable to face himself, or love. But me, I love being who I am! If more people loved themselves … they wouldn’t have such a hard time seducing others.” I surveyed him as I slurped some melted ice from the bottom of my glass and chomped on it, because it was late and I was kind of hungry. The father of two and a Harlem resident, Mr. Temtchine was married just once, at 20. (“I had to get away from my mother.”) One of his children resulted from the marriage; the other from a long-term relationship. He spent 20 years working in New York as a hairstylist, “making beautiful women even more beautiful,” all the while listening to their complaints, their desires, their frustrations with men.

Then he turned his attentions to Hollywood, producing films including the Adrien Brody ventriloquist movie, Dummy, in 2002. He’s currently directing a film he wrote, titled, yes, How to Seduce Difficult Women, about a French man in New York who helps the relationship-challenged learn the art of seduction. The film is expected to open in the summer. His seduction film and lecture arose when he realized his decades as a hairstylist made him one of the few straight men with an all-access pass to the portal of feminine insight. The lectures, the first to be held at Opia on East 57th Street on Jan. 28, will feature Mr. Temtchine along with five “gorgeous and difficult” women whom he chose at random from coffee shops and cafes, using a sixth sense that, he explained, told him they were difficult. New York is full of difficult women, he reminded me. (It occurred to me: I am one of these difficult New York women.) I asked him for some tips he’ll be giving in his lectures. If you expect to seduce an interesting women, make sure you are interesting. Remember, like attracts like! Incorporate interesting activities into your routine. Do not be afraid. Women can smell intimidation and it is not attractive. Harness your humor. Utilize it wisely. Avoid crass banter. Above all, he said, know yourself. “Because in approaching a women, it’s never going to be what you look like or how much money you make,” he said. “It’s going to be who you are, and women being far more instinctive than men, they will find out much faster than you will who you are.
They will make a judgement very quickly, and you will have no idea who you are.”

Visual Acoustics" is nominally about the life and career of landmark Southern California architectural photographer Julius Shulman, but it's more about the buildings he photographed than it is about him. Which is probably the way he'd like it.

Not that Shulman, who died in July at age 98, was any kind of shrinking violet. Quite the contrary. As revealed in this respectful documentary by Eric Bricker, Shulman could be cantankerous and never hesitated to speak his mind. When actress Kelly Lynch tells him "You are a rock star," he takes it all in stride.
But it is the houses he photographed that obsessed Schulman more than his image. And what houses they were. Name any major architect who worked in Los Angeles during Shulman's lifetime -- Richard Neutra, Rudolph M. Schindler, Pierre Koenig, John Lautner, Charles and Ray Eames, Craig Ellwood, Raphael Soriano, Gregory Ain -- and chances are Shulman photographed their work.

More than just a photographer, Shulman was a proselytizer for the Modernism the structures represented. These architects believed their work could change the world, and they loved Shulman because he defined the way we look at Modernism, because his impeccable work created a mythology around these houses that hasn't gone away.

Shulman was born on the East Coast and moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1920; as his daughter Judy says, "Dad and Los Angeles grew up together." Schindler and Neutra, the twin towers of California Modernism, were his first clients, but Shulman really came into his own later on.

Some of Shulman's biggest successes were with the Case Study houses, affordable Los Angeles structures designed after World War II. Featured in the film is perhaps Shulman's most famous shot, a spectacular 1960 nighttime view of Koenig's Case Study House No. 22 that hangs midair over the city skyline.
Shulman also shot a lot in Palm Springs, and when Neutra's celebrated Kaufmann House was restored, his photographs were as useful as blueprints in determining what the structure had looked like in its prime.

The advent of Postmodernism, which he had no use for, caused Shulman to quasi-retire, but he outlived that trend to a time when everyone knew his name. Celebrities like Tom Ford and Ed Ruscha are shown singing his praises, and the film features some hypnotic footage that cinematographer Dante Spinotti shot at Shulman-photographed houses. Maybe that "rock star" comment isnt so hyperbolic after all.

I know this film will serve as further proof that Michael Jackson is one of the greatest entertainers who ever graced a stage.”“Michael lives on through his songs, his creative genius, his body of work and his passion for his art,” said Rob Stringer. “He was a perfectionist on stage and through this unique film, audiences will be able to see, many for the first time, how much Michael poured into making his performances as special as they were perfect.”

Said Kenny Ortega, director of and Jackson’s creative partner on the This Is It concert, “The world will see what our team was so fortunate to experience, which was the full commitment, passion and creativity that Michael put into this project. He was the architect of This Is It, and we were his builders. The footage that was captured from the early stages of the production to our technical rehearsals at the STAPLES Center in L.A. will show Michael as he truly was, creatively involved with every aspect of the production, from the staging and choreography, to the music, lighting, production design and conception of the original short films and video backdrops. It will also show Michael as one of the greatest entertainers in the world and one of the industry’s most creative minds. This Is It was Michael’s last theatrical work and although it was still a work in progress, I think the footage will show that the process was something that Michael deeply enjoyed and that it was clear that he was on his way to another theatrical triumph.”

In the coming weeks, additional information about the film will be available at www.michaeljackson.com.Peter Schlessel, President of Worldwide Affairs, negotiated for the footage on behalf of Sony Pictures. Branca represented The Estate of Michael Jackson.Michael Jackson, one of the most widely beloved entertainers and profoundly influential artists of all-time, leaves an indelible imprint on popular music and culture.

Dead Air Hollywood Movie Review: At the center of this politically charged tale is Logan Burnhardt the ego-king of the airwaves, but his unflappable persona is put to the test when a terrorist bio-attack unleashes a plague of flesh-ripping maniacs on Los Angeles. He experiences the horror first-hand as their normally wacked-out callers bombard the station with news of this very real horror spreading around them. How they come to discover the reality of the toxic invasion and ultimately choose to deal with it becomes the focus of “Dead Air,” which is just as much a character study as it is a horror film. A Howard Stern-esque rock star deejay is on for the night shift when chaos hits his home city of Los Angeles. This isn’t just your garden variety riots or 6-point-something earthquake… It’s flesh-eating zombies, and it’s up to him to guide his listeners through a brutal night of terror. Dead Air,” has switched release dates a few times, but the message has been heard and a possible April 2009 release has been talked of. Similar in town to “28 Days Later,” this films premise revolves around a bio-terrorist attack that leaves those who come in contact with the virus in a state of paranoia. Bill Moseley is the star and an actor who has much experience in the horror world. See the first trailer here..

Whenever there is a film from Suriya, the expectations are high and there is also an element of variety offered from him. So this time, he has come up with ‘Ghatikudu’ and let us see how different it has been from his earlier ventures.

A strict judge (Ramesh Kanna) is made the head of an enquiry commission that is checking on the deaths of several children. He has done his investigation and in a week’s time he is about to submit his report. This causes worry to the bad guy Dr Abdul (Rahul dev) and he gives a killing contract to Ashok (Suriya) who is based in Kolkata. Ashok is a sharp shooter who grows up with Ibrahim (Sayaji) and never misses his target. However, when the time comes, he misses the mark and things go wrong. However, Ashok doesn’t give up and decides to give one more shot. This time, he disguises himself as a relative to Banerjee (Vadivelu) who is working in the house of the judge. Slowly, he enters their house and begins hatching his plot. Is he successful or not? or is there any other motive behind this? All this forms the rest of the story.

It is a rather understandable plot and the director has not worked hard on the script, he just presented it well. The narrative lacked the depth so it failed to connect strongly with the audience. The dialogues were okay, script was weak and the screenplay was with good pace. Background score was a letdown and was more of a hindrance at many places. Songs were alright but three songs were worth humming. Cinematography captured the angles very well and deserves appreciation. Editing was crisp, costumes department was effective, art was neat. Fights have been choreographed very well and they are worth mentioning. The other departments were alright.

Actually, the film would have been a lot more better if the makers didn’t look at it commercially. The voltage was missing at key scenes and the climax was very bland. There are places where the Telugu audience cannot relate to the Tamil flavor but overall, the dubbing aspect has been neat. Suriya’s 12 year old act was a major highlight. He has come up with an impressive performance once again, Nayantara has to do some serious homework on her look and appearance, she looks terrible and firstly, she must remove that nose stud. Where is the Nayan we saw in ‘Chandramukhi’ ‘Lakshmi’’Thulasi’?. Ramesh Kanna was standard, the real show stealer was Vadivelu with hilarious comedy, Anu Haasan was effective, Rahul Dev could have been used in a better way, Sayaji Shinde was grossly underutilized. B Saroja Devi was energetic and lively, the others contributed effectively to make their presence felt. There are few fundamental flaws the makers are making despite having some real good cast and what could have been, an interesting plot. There could have been enough twists and the story doesn’t take off until the second half to be honest. Romance track was quite weak and the chemistry was missing. Climax was pathetic and it just reminds us of the 80s. Scenes like car hanging with heroine from top are of bygone era. However, the commercial and masala elements might appeal to the B and C center audience and the title gives a feel of a complete action treat, it is not so. This might be an average grosser but to make it to success mark, it would need more publicity and some positive word of mouth.

Overall, just an average masala treat with formula
